The annual Peter Obaseki Football Tournament was set up in 2011 to create a productive avenue for recreation in a rural environment where the means of livelihood is predominantly farming and sundry artisan activities. The prime time for agricultural activities is usually from very early morning to early afternoon before the weather begins to heat up. It becomes very convenient to engage in football practice sessions in the evening before dusk sets in. In the absence of this recreation, it could be very boring, especially without electricity at night.
Football is very exciting and popular with the people, capable of attracting a huge audience of spectators to activate and enliven the communities. In the process, peace and happiness can be fostered across communities, friendships forged among the people and entertainment engendered while encouraging physical exercises. The tournament has now entered the 14th consecutive year, with around 20 football clubs in the competition, from neighboring communities, Ovia region, Benin City, Ondo State and Delta State.
The Peter Obaseki Football Tournament is purely for community upliftment, putting Igbogor on the World soccer map, through early identification of talents, that will one day enter and excel in the global arena. The tournament is open to all regardless of religion, tribal identities or political affiliations. Our expectations are to improve the quality of life in the community, expose young talents to a rewarding career in football and support a crime-free environment conducive for productivity.
This tournament was founded and solely sponsored by Peter Osabuohien Obaseki, a third generation in Igbogor. The tournament is named and wrapped around the OBASEKI brand which stands out, always, for services to humanity.
The management of the tournament is overseen by the Founder, Saint Lawrence Catholic Church, and two representatives of the community.
At inception, we were greatly encouraged and technically assisted by Reverend Father Raphael Anoje.
