The 14th Edition Obaseki Annual Football Competition took place at Igbogor. All matches were played at the Abesi Primary School Pitch.

A total of fourteen teams participated in this year's edition, and they were drawn into fixtures in the following order:

  2. Young Stars F.C Usen
  3. Bright F.C Abafah

Aims and Objectives:

The tournament was organized and proudly sponsored by Mr. Peter Obaseki (JP, FCIB) with the aim of positively impacting the lives of youths in Igbogor and its environs through sports. The initiative also seeks to address youth restiveness in Ovia North East and South West Local Government areas of Edo State.

Initially, the tournament was limited to teams from Ovia. However, due to its consistency and the value it has added, the tournament has now attracted teams from outside Ovia. The interest in participating has also increased significantly over the years.

For several years, the tournament has rewarded its winners with prizes. The champion, first runner-up, and second runner-up receive cash prizes, medals, and a trophy for the champion.

The just concluded edition in 2024, the finalist were given branded tournament set of jerseys.

Event Highlights

Major highlights of the tournament included the identification and selection of talented players from various clubs. These players will be given the opportunity for further development and will be sent to teams in the Nigerian Football Professional League (NFPL) and the National Leagues. With hard work and dedication, some of these players may also have the opportunity to represent the national teams, by the grace of God.

A total of 55 goals were scored throughout the tournament. The breakdown of the goals scored is as follows:

 

  • Pliminary stage: 35 goals
  • Quarter-finals: 12 goals
  • Semi-finals: 4 goals
  • Third-place match: 3 goals
  • Final match: 1 goal

Additionally, during the knockout stages, some winners were determined by penalty shootouts, which accounted for 29 goals.

Economic Impact

This tournament over the years has brought people from far & near to Igbogor and this has increased the buying & selling of goods and services in Igbogor.
